Preflop Charts for 6-Max Cash Games

100bb stacks · No ante · Opens, 3-bets, 4-bets and 5-bets for every position

Quick answer

Open about 17.9% of hands under the gun and 42.4% on the button. Each seat closer to the button opens wider. Below are the opening chart for every position, big blind defense, and an explorer with all 65 spots: opens, 3-bets, 4-bets and 5-bets.

How to read a preflop chart

Each grid shows all 169 starting hands. Pairs run down the diagonal from AA to 22, suited hands sit above it and offsuit hands below. A cell’s color shows what to do with that hand; a split cell means the hand mixes actions, and the width of each color is its frequency. On a computer, hover over a cell for the exact numbers.

Every chart assumes 100 big blind stacks at a 6-max table, no ante and no limpers. Opening sizes are UTG 2bb, HJ 2.1bb, CO 2.2bb, BTN 2.4bb, SB 2.6bb. These are the same charts PokerClimb uses for its preflop drills.

Big blind defense

The big blind already has a full blind in the pot and closes the action, so it gets a discount to continue and defends wider than any other seat. The later the open, the wider the defense. See pot odds for why the price matters so much.

Frequently asked questions

What is a preflop chart?

A preflop chart is a 13x13 grid of all 169 starting hands, colored by what to do with each one in a specific spot: raise, call or fold. Each spot, like opening from the cutoff or defending the big blind against a button open, has its own chart.

How many hands should you open from each position?

In these 6-max 100bb charts: UTG opens 17.9% of hands, HJ 22.6%, CO 28.6%, BTN 42.4% and SB 45.2%. Each seat closer to the button opens wider.

How often should the big blind defend against a button open?

Against a 2.4bb button open, the big blind continues with 47.1% of hands: 13.0% as a 3-bet and 34.0% as a call. The big blind defends wider than any other seat because it already has a full blind in the pot.

Do these charts work for live poker and tournaments?

They are built for 6-max cash games with 100 big blind stacks and no ante. Tournaments with antes and shorter stacks, and live games with bigger opens and more limpers, need different ranges, but the structure, tighter early and wider late, holds everywhere.

What do the mixed colors in a cell mean?

A split cell means the hand is played with more than one action at set frequencies, for example 3-betting 40% of the time and calling 60%. If you do not want to mix, picking either action for that hand costs very little.

Memorize them by playing

Charts stick when you use them. PokerClimb drills these spots in 10 quick decisions a day.
